![]() This mission is made possible with God working through the hearts of individuals, families, supporters, and donors. Show Hope exists to care for orphans by engaging the Church and reducing barriers to adoption. The Knowledge Barrier: Many who have the ability to make a difference in the lives of waiting children do not take action because they are unaware of the need or feel helpless to do anything. The Medical Barrier: Many children who have been orphaned live with mild to acute healthcare needs, requiring access to medical and therapeutic intervention. That is outside the financial reach of most families. The Financial Barrier: The average cost of adoption can range between $25,000 and $50,000. While the needs of orphans are both varying and complex, there are three key issues Show Hope seeks to address: It impacts children from every walk of life. It crosses international borders, racial divides, and economic classes. Today, there are millions of children in the world who have been orphaned. ![]() ![]() In that period of his life, Sun Wukong would also battle various enemies such as the Dragon King of the sea and various sea demons. Growing among other monkeys and animals, Sun Wukong also managed to become their king or the so-called King of Monkeys after several feats, such as jumping into a waterfall and swimming upstream. As he grew, he also became more monkey-like, meaning that the stone turned into flesh and he grew a thick coat of hair. Left to his own devices, Sun Wukong eventually befriended some of the other animals on the mountain. ![]() Hearing this, the Jade Emperor quickly lost interest. When they returned they told him it was just a stone monkey and that the light died down when the monkey ate or drank water. Curious, the emperor sent two of his officers to investigate. The beams shone up toward the palace of the Jade Emperor in Heaven and startled the deity. To make his birth even more interesting, once Sun Wukong opened his eyes, two golden light beans started shooting out of them. At the same time, the inception of the egg from the yin and yang is a very Taoist concept. This origin story is similar to that of the Hindu Monkey deity Hanuman who was also born when the wind (or the Hindu God of Wind Vayu) blew upon a rock. As the wind blew past the egg it turned into a stone monkey that immediately started crawling and walking. In Sun Wukong’s case, yin and yang turned the magic rock into a womb within which an egg was hatched.Įventually, the egg broke the stone and was left exposed to the elements. The combination of these two Universal constants is what creates the life inside the stone similar to how Pan Gu, the Taoist creation deity, is created by yin and yang in the cosmic egg. yang or “positive nature”) but it also receives nurture from the Earth (yin or “negative nature”). Part of the stone’s magic was that it receives nurture from Heaven (i.e. The monkey was born inside a large magic stone that stood atop Mount Huahuo, or the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. The way Sun Wukong comes into being is both unique and somewhat familiar. He also discovered many fantastic weapons and armor throughout his life, including his signature eight-ton staff weapon that could shrink to the size of a toothpick or grow into a giant weapon. Some of these abilities Sun Wukong was born with, while others he developed or discovered on his travels. The Monkey King was also able to magically freeze people into position mid-fight.He possessed weather manipulation abilities.Sun Wukong could also create copies or mirror images of himself. The Monkey King could transform himself into 72 different animals.Sun Wukong could run “with the speed of a meteor”.He had immense strength, enough to hold two celestial mountains on his shoulders.Sun Wukong’s amazing powersīefore going into his story, let’s quickly list all the phenomenal abilities and powers Sun Wukong possessed: Even though the Journey to the West novel was written (only) five centuries ago, Sun Wukong is viewed as a core character in Chinese mythology, albeit a new one. ![]() ![]() Actually, eating them is part of the customs fo the festival - believed to bring happiness and good health. Don’t worry, you can also eat these dango. These white dumplings made of rice are often presented in 15 to represent the fifteenth of the month, or sometimes 12 to represent the number of months in the year. It’s chosen as offerings as it represents the beauty of the moon - round and pure white. If you see stacked dango ( 団子) as decorations, that’s pretty normal. Arranging them on the roof is offering it to the moon god. ![]() Suzuki is used in a bunch of five to ten plumes to resemble rice plants, and believed to prevent any evil from entering the area. Of course, they’re arranged in the traditional Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana (生け花). You’ll often see susuki ( ススキ, pampas grass) - since it’s the tallest in the autumn season - and other autumn flowers placed at home or around the area for the moon-viewing party. Decorations are somewhat huge when it comes to Tsukimi. Some Japanese people will burn incense, visit shrines and offer the food of their harvest to the Shinto gods. Nowadays, the practice and customs of Tsukimi are practiced even a few days leading up to the full moon instead of just on the day itself - regardless of whether or not the moon is visible. It caught on in the 1600s when even the commoners celebrate it - maybe not on boats as such. It originally was just a basic moon-viewing party for the upper class, the elite, who have boat gatherings and listen to music under the stars and the moon’s reflection. ![]() Tsukimi goes way back to the Nara period of 710AD to 794AD. It falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, so it’s usually between mid-September and the beginning of October. There isn’t a fixed date each year - it greatly depends on the lunar calendar. This traditional ceremony takes place in autumn to honor the autumn moon, also known as the harvest moon ( 名月, meigetsu), expressing gratitude and pray for a successful seasonal harvest. The moon is so greatly respected that there is even a holiday in Japan for moon-viewing: Tsukimi ( 月見). Regardless of which religion one is in, the Japanese people collectively look up to the moon as a positive force in their beliefs. In Zen Buddhism, the moon symbolises enlightenment. The moon god’s sister takes the stage most of the time, but at night, Tsukuyomi embodies all the positive things of the dark sky - spirituality, dreams and energy balance. The Japanese mood god is called Tsukuyomi in Shinto and the sun goddess is Amaterasu. Shinto centers on the spirit of nature while Zen Buddhism concentrates on selflessness and enlightenment. Religion in Japan is a mixture of traditional Shinto as well as Zen Buddhism - both having a strong appreciation for the beauty of earthly creations. Japan is famously called “The Land of the Rising Sun”, but this island nation has a long association with the moon, it becoming an important part of their culture and beliefs. ![]() So stick around to fill yourself with all of these exciting info and more! The Moon in Japanese Culture Along with that, we’ll take a look at the various representations the moon has, as well as the rare and beautiful blood moon - quite an untapped topic when talking about the moon and Japan. ![]() They have a whole festival just for moon viewing - which I’ll talk about more at a later part. ![]() Setting all of that aside there could've been some major adjustments that would've made this a superior than all of the installments in the franchise combined. Some newer casting choices were superior than originally. The eerie soundtrack helped the drama and horror elements. ![]() While not as gory as the sequels, it's impressive than originally. Some newer deaths were more creative than the originals. The drama helped when the humor lacked.Despite reusing the same script, some twists were clever.Overall, poor remake, Eli Roth what the hell are you thinking backing this?Īfter viewing it, I have extremely mixed feelings about it. But not everything of course, the Winston at the underage party scene was way better in the original.Īnd worst of all, what the hell was with that mid credit scene? Made absolutely no sense! Are they trying to imply something supernatural is going on? WTF? I thought a few of the character's death were more brutal (particularly Karen's) and the "safety's on" part actually got a giggle out of me. The highlight for me though was the last twenty minutes where they attempted a few new things. There was no suspense as I knew who was gonna die thus I got bored easily and checked my phone a lot. Why do this style of remaking as it evidently never works (Psycho and Carrie remakes). Plus, as was expected, almost everything was the same. Chemistry sucked too, just felt like a bunch of actors getting together for an easy buck. Bert and Deputy Winston were my favorite characters in the original movie, and here they are just bland as hell. Here are my thoughts.įirst, the humor was sorely missed. ![]() ![]() "Having lots of the classic caramel spice and complexity actually helps ensure the product is ultimately delicious but not too unfamiliar. " We not only wanted to elevate our brand but also to provide choices that pair with and enhance the drinking experience of premium dark liquors. As Coca-Cola already dominates dark spirit mixers, it's natural that the folk at Coke have strived to meet this need by producing their Signature Mixers range. Dark mixers suit dark spirits, after all, when making an Old-Fashioned, bartenders prefer brown sugar to white sugar.ĭark spirits, particularly whisk(e)y and rum are dramatically growing in popularity and in the same way that the rise of gin brought with it an array of different tonic waters, so there's a perceived consumer need for mixers specifically designed to go with dark spirits. It ranked highest for both upper abs and lower abs and very good for obliques in study 1 and highest for upper abs in study 4. This was a winner in the two studies that included it. Hanging Leg Raise INCLINE CURL-UPĪlso called: incline reverse crunch or decline bench curl-up. You can also start with straight legs and bend them as you fatigue. Keep your legs bent until you’re strong enough to use straight legs. ✅ The straighter (and longer) your legs are, the greater the resistance. (It’s also contrary to much “expert advice,” which incorrectly tells you to keep your torso rigidly horizontal.) Doing it in this way, without swinging, maximally activates your abs. ✅ The important thing is to raise your knees as high as possible so that your butt comes up and your spine curls forward. (For good measure, here’s EMG study 5 that ranked it the highest for rectus abs of any ab exercise.) You can also do these while simply gripping an overhead bar, but don’t if your grip is the weakest link. Whether performed hanging with arm straps or in a captain’s chair with your forearms balanced on pads, leg raise with your upper body vertical was the only exercise to rank high in all four studies-though, other than the crunch, it was the only exercise in all four studies. Best for obliques: pike (with Power Wheel). Second for lower abs: vertical leg raise (hanging). The roll-out (with Power Wheel) nearly tied it and was best for lower abs and second best for external obliques. The incline curl-up (called “incline reverse crunch”) ranked best for upper abs. EMG study 4: Rafael F Escamilla, etc., 2006, 21 men & women, 12 ab exercises. The crunch (with arms extended) ranked highest for upper abs, the vertical leg raise (hanging) ranked highest for lower abs, and the bicycle crunch ranked high for lower and upper abs. EMG study 3: Boeckh-Behrens & Buskies, 2000, 10 men, 12 ab exercises. This study didn’t distinguish between upper and lower abs. Third for rectus abs: stability ball crunch. Two exercises ranked far above the others for both rectus ab and oblique activation: vertical leg raise (captain’s chair) and bicycle crunch. EMG study 2: The American Council on Exercise, 2001, 30 men and women, 13 ab exercises.Second best for upper and lower abs was the stability ball crunch, but the vertical leg raise (both hanging and captain’s chair) virtually tied it for lower ab activation. ![]() One exercise ranked highest for both upper and lower rectus abs (and second highest for obliques): incline curl-up. ![]()
